OPENING, CLOSING AND AWARDS CEREMONIES

Opening Ceremony 

The SMM2017 Biennial Conference will have its opening ceremony on Monday, October 23, 2017 between 8:00 AM - 9:05 AM. 

The conference will start off on Monday morning bright and early at 8:00 in the Scotiabank Centre with introductory remarks and welcoming addresses by your conference co-chairs, SMM president, and others. This session will include an In Memorium video presentation and announcement of a new Society award - the Louis M. Herman Scholarship Fund! To honor the legacy of Dr. Louis M. Herman, a giant in the field of marine mammal research, his wife Hannah, their daughter Elia, and Dr. Adam Pack will be announcing the Louis M. Herman Scholarship Fund. The scholarship, established by the Herman family, with support from Dr. Herman’s colleagues and friends, will fund student research in marine mammal cognition and humpback whale behavioral ecology and communication.

Closing Ceremony

The member's meeting, closing remarks, Norris award presentation (by Dr. Randy Reeves) and awards ceremony will occur on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 15:30-18:00 PM.

SMM Members' Meeting

The biennial meeting of the members of the Society for Marine Mammalogy will be held on Friday, October 27 from 16:10-17:15 at the Scotiabank Centre in the Plenary Session room. All members are welcome. This is your opportunity to learn about the SMM and what we are doing on your behalf. Nominations for SMM officers and members-at-large will be solicited and there will be an opportunity for you to express what matters most to you. Now is the time to get involved! Science matters, but it needs your support to flourish. Students are strongly encouraged to attend. 

Awards Ceremony 

The award winning presenters will be announced at the awards ceremony which will be held after the SMM Members Meeting on Friday at 17:15-18:00 in the Scotiabank Centre. Please join us to applaud and congratulate outstanding conference presenters!
