The very first fully hybrid conference of the Society for Marine Mammalogy will be held on August 1-5, 2022. Going hybrid means there are two ways to participate in SMM2022: live and in-person at the Palm Beach County Convention Center and/or virtually through our new online experience.
The conference will span 5 days and each day there will be a plenary session with distinguished keynote speakers that will be live-streamed. Concurrent sessions will be accessible to all attendees via pre-recorded content. All pre-recorded presentations will be made available at the start of each respective session for virtual and in-person attendees.
In-person presentations will be presented live at the venue; these sessions will not be live-streamed. In addition, a virtual Q & A session with the presenters will be streamed for the virtual audience during scheduled times following the completion of each live session.
All attendees will have access to the virtual conference, so people who will not be able to join the conference in person due to health concerns or other travel restrictions in your country will still be able to participate, present, and interact with other conference attendees and vendors. It will be a whole new conference experience!
Virtual content will be available on-demand for all in-person and virtual attendees during the conference and for 30 days post-conference.
NEED A VISA LETTER TO TRAVEL TO THE CONFERENCE?
After you have completed payment for your conference registration, please email conference@marinemammalscience.org and we can send you an official SMM2022 VISA letter to attached with your travel documentation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
POSTPONEMENT QUESTIONS
I already paid for conference registration. What should I do?
You don’t need to do anything! We will be rolling all registrations forward to the future conference date. However, if there is a reason you would like a refund we will work with you. Please contact registration@marinemammalscience.org if you have any questions. Please be patient while we work through requests.
What is your registration refund policy?
If you require a refund for your conference registration, or any other items you’ve already paid for (e.g. workshop, merchandise, etc.), please contact registration@marinemammalscience.org and we will work to provide you with a full refund until Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 12pm (noon) EDT. After this date, our standard cancellation of $100 USD handling fee for registration cancellations will apply.
The $100 USD handling fee was in effect for registration cancellations prior to March 1, 2022; however, after that date there is no refunds for registration. Registration is non-transferable among attendees. All other items registration items paid for (e.g. event tickets or merchandise) are subject to full refunds.
Pre-ordered merchandise will not be refunded after the deadline of July 1, 2022.
I didn’t take advantage of early bird registration because I was uncertain about traveling, will you be extending early bird now?
Don’t worry! We will be reopening and extending the early bird registration window. Early bird registration will now be open until Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 12pm (noon) EDT. If you registered after the original early bird deadline and paid full price, please reach out to registration@marinemammalscience.org to request a partial refund until Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 12pm (noon) EDT.
COMMON QUESTIONS
When is the early bird registration deadline?
The NEW early bird registration deadline is Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 12pm, Eastern Daylight Time (GMT -4).
Can I change my registration to virtual or in-person after early bird registration?
All attendees will have until Wednesday, April 13, 2022 to change their registration (e.g. virtual to in-person and vice versa).
Is there a cancellation and/or refund policy?
There will be a $100 USD handling fee for registration cancellations prior to March 1, 2022. After that date there will be no refunds for registration. Registration is non-transferable among attendees.
All other items paid for (e.g. event tickets or merchandise) are subject to refunds; however, pre-ordered merchandise will not be refunded after the deadline of July 1, 2022.
Requests for refunds must be submitted to registration@marinemammalscience.org and refunds will be issued to the same method of payment used to secure payment.
I’ve recently graduated. Can I still register as a ‘student’?
If you are no longer a student, but are planning on presenting work at the conference that you conducted as a student, and you graduated less than one year ago, then you can submit an abstract and register as a student! You will also be considered for student awards.
Note: A letter from your professor/institute verifying that you completed the work you will be presenting as a student will be required.
I’m under the age of 18. Can I still register and attend the conference?
The SMM2022 Board has established the following policy regarding the active participation of minors (attendees under 18 years old) at the Conference. This policy has been put into place to assure that all presentations will be led by adults, which was the assumption of the abstract review process.
The SMM2022 Policy for Attendance of Minors is as follows:
- All presentations (Oral talks, Speed talks, Poster, etc.) during the SMM2022 are to be led by an adult. A minor can assist with the presentation.
- Underage assistants must always be with an accompanying adult when they are at the Conference.
- All accompanying adults of minors have to pay full registration for the conference.
How do I know if I qualify for a low income country registration?
Registration options are determined by SMM membership status. Members originally from low income countries who are living and working in high income countries on an equivalent salary to local nationals, should consider themselves to be “high income”. Conversely, members originally from high income countries but who are working in low income countries on a low income salary equivalent to that received by nationals, can consider themselves to be “low income”. The membership rate is a reflection on an ability to pay rather than place of birth.
How do I request a VISA letter so that I can travel to the conference?
After you have completed payment for your conference registration, please email conference@marinemammalscience.org and we can send you an official SMM2022 VISA letter to attached with your travel documentation.
