Abstract submission, workshop submission and conference registration opens Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 12 pm (noon) Australian Western Standard Time (AWST).

Abstract / Workshop Submission Deadline

March 26, 2024

Abstract and workshop submission will close on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 12 pm (AWST).

Abstract and Workshop Acceptance Notifications

May 15, 2024

Acceptance notifications will be sent out on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

Early Bird Registration Deadline

July 24, 2024

Early bird registration deadline is end of day Wednesday, July 24, 2024. After July 24, standard rates will apply.

Early Check-In

November 8, 2024

Early check-in will be available from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre for those who wish to register in advance.

Smoking Ceremony and Sundowner

November 10, 2024

As the sun sets over Perth City, be welcomed to Whadjuk Country by Traditional Owners with a special didgeridoo performance and smoking ceremony. Relax and reunite with friends and colleagues in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre Garden from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. Canapés will be provided, and drinks will be available at a cash bar. This event is included in registration. Guest tickets are available for $30 USD.

Symposium Day 1

November 11, 2024

The conference will begin with an official opening, Welcome to Country by a Whadjuk Elder, First Nations keynote and a plenary speaker. The conference takes place in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The SMM Student Members-at-Large (SMaLs) are thrilled to host the biennial Student Night! Taking place on Wednesday, November 13th 2024 from 18:30 to 21:00 (6:30 pm to 9 pm) at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, this is an opportunity for students to socialize and network with professionals and other students.The event will involve both structured “speed-socializing” with students and mentors (professionals from across the field of marine mammal science, including professors, veterinarians, government scientists, and non-profit directors, among others) and time for unstructured, one-on-one conversations. Day four of the conference continues in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9 am to 7:30 pm.

LGBTIQA+ Night

All are welcome at Picabar for the LGBTIQA+ night, an easy stroll into the Perth Cultural Centre, heart of Perth’s LGBTIQA+ scene. It is located on the corner of the Perth Institute of Creative Arts, 51 James St, Northbridge, a much-loved heritage-listed building. The outdoor deck will be set aside for us, and gourmet pizzas provided. 8-10pm.

Symposium Day 5

November 15, 2024

The final day of the conference will feature presentations continuing at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9 am to 5 pm. The Closing Ceremony and Conference Awards will take place in the Riverside Theatre from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. The SMM AGM will also be held in the Riverside Theatre from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.

Farewell BBQ and Closing Celebration

Celebrate the end of the conference with a classic Aussie BBQ! Watch the sun set and the moon rise, then dance the night away at the iconic Fraser’s Restaurant in King’s Park, overlooking the city and the river. The event will run from 6:30 pm to 11:30 pm. This is a ticketed event and not included in registration. Guest tickets are available for $50 USD.
