CALL FOR VIDEOS — SMM2026 VIDEO NIGHT

Do you have a story about marine mammals worth sharing with the world?

We invite all attendees of the SMM2026 Conference to submit a short film and share their ocean story with the global marine mammal community during our Video Night screening event.

Please note that Video Night is dedicated to storytelling and creative content, rather than scientific presentations or conference talks. We are looking for creative and engaging videos that highlight:

  • Memorable encounters with marine mammals
  • Fieldwork experiences and behind-the-scenes moments
  • Conservation stories and community initiatives
  • Artistic and creative perspectives
  • Ocean-inspired animations

This call is focused on storytelling and creative expression rather than scientific presentations or formal conference talks.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Please review the following submission details before submitting:

  • Topic: Marine mammals
  • Categories: Live-action & animation
  • Recommended duration: Up to 4 minutes
  • Deadline: 10 August 2026
  • Selected videos will be screened during SMM2026 Video Night

CRITERIA

Please review the following criteria before submitting:

  1. The person submitting a film needs to be a current member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy.
  2. The person submitting a film must have the intellectual property rights to do so. Any music contained in the submission needs to have associated performing rights. 
  3. All footage on marine mammals needs to have been obtained under ethics and other relevant research permits or to be accompanied by a statement of why permits were not required or obtained. 
  4. Films will only be shown at the SMM2026 Video Night and will not be distributed to any other parties.
  5. Films can be submitted in any format and by providing the entire video file or a link to the footage. There are no guidelines for the content or quality of the films.  

HOW TO SUBMIT

Please follow the steps below to submit your entry:

  1. To get started, you must login to the conference system via the SMM website. Click HERE to get started.
  2. Once on your conference ‘Profile Home’, choose “SMM2026 Video Night”.
  3. Answer all the required questions regarding your submission. To ensure that your data are entered correctly, please follow all directions carefully.
  4. After submitting your entry, a receipt of your submission will be emailed to you.
  5. Deadline for submissions is end of day August 10, 2026.
  6. Acceptance emails will be sent on by the end of August, 2026.
